Description:
I did this ink and pastel drawing in 1969. I was spending a lot of my spare time working with artists in Mirvish Village in Toronto and still had not made up my mind as to what I wanted to do with my life. Was I going to pursue a career in art or in business? The decision was soon taken out of my hands.
The Vietnam war was going hot and heavy, which totally erased any appeal I might have had for immigrating to the United States, as some of my relatives had done in previous generations. Playboy magazine was at its peak and was a mirror of western culture. Images from Playboy, the war, Cuba and entertainers were worked into this time capsule composition.
For decades this drawing sat in a folder with many others that I did at that time. My daughter in 2008 decided she wanted them and had them framed. The original of this image is on the wall of her house.
Forty-one years later, I find it interesting that I still like those colors in my work. The United States is at war in Afghanistan. Bombing and starvation are still with us. Playboy is old fashioned. Hugh Heffner is old and living in denial.
